Katrina keeps racial lines clear in the media
You would think the press could give these people a break, especially since our beloved President Bush was GOLFING in ARIZONA as the disaster was occuring, and Condoleeza Rice was attending a production of SPAMALOT in New York City this past weekend. AP posted these two nearly identical photos with these captions.
(Notice they are a white couple)
"Two residents wade through chest deep water after finding bread and soda from a local grocery store after Hurricane Katrina came through the area in New Orleans, Louisiana."
(Notice he's black?) "A young man walks through chest deep flood water after looting a grocery store in New Orleans on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005. Flood waters continue to rise in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina did extensive damage when it made landfall on Monday."
Nice eh? Because he's black, he's looting. 'Cause that's what black people do. I hate the media.

Oh, I agree, don't get me wrong. I just hate that the media is so biased as to lable people that way. Personally, I don't understand why snipers are shooting at helicopters.
There was also the woman who handed her 2 year old child up onto a bus, but before she could get on herself, was shoved to the ground. The child was taken probably to Houston, the mother was put on a bus 2 days later, thanks to a reporter who grabbed a cop on camera, but as of last nights Dateline, they had not been reunited yet.
Did you watch the NBC telethon tonight? Kanye West has obviously never read off a teleprompter before. They had to cut him off when he started adlibbing: "George Bush doesn't care about black people..." and off he went. That was an eyepopper.
The mother WAS reunited with her child. Saw it on the news.
While I do not condone ANY of this, you have to realize things in the South are different. There are whites, blacks, and cajuns (ie people who immigrated from Haiti, Martinique...). Blacks are N****** and Cajuns are lower than that. They keep to themselves and have reputations of being poor thugs who swindle tourists. While I don't believe this stereotype there are many that do, and that's just the way it is.
As evil as Mississippi and Arkansas are, Louisiana is a million times worse. They don't even make an effort towards that seperate but equal.
Also the difference between finding and looting right now -- finders are taking what they need from themselves, looters are taking shitloads of stuff. There have been whites labeled as looters and smpathetic cajuns and black taking bags of things for their babies (many didn't have formula let alone diapers).
So just remember that that is what the media is choosing to show. Tennessee is about to be declared a disaster area so we can better help these people. Our schools and hospitals have been overrun, and Memphis is about to double in size. So our news is coming off alot different than yours is.
Also remember Richelley you live in the most conservative area in the nation. Provo = most conservative, Detroit = most liberal. Im sure your media has all kinds of goodies!
Probably yes. But I haven't lived my entire life here, or even in this country. In Washington, all hispanics are labeled "Mexican". Mexicans would be close to the cajun equivalent, those from other Central American countries being only slightly higher up the scale than that. Blacks, the few that there are really, (and I say that in respect to other states that have a higher black population) are only under whites on the scale. So I understand where you're coming from, I just don't see the need for being the tags. There are plenty of hispanics that are better off and better people than many others but that doesn't stop the stigma.
And Salt Lake, where I live is #97 on the most liberal cities in America list. Not high I know, but at least it's on there.
I should also add that the Cree Indian tribe is the lowest of the low in Canada. Or at least Winnipeg. There the people actually steer clear of some parts of town, putting as my aunt did, "this is Indian hooker territory. Fat, toothless, and $2." Isn't that nice?
